In the late 1800's my husband's maternal grandfather was the first studio photographer in Dublin, Ireland. Precious few of his photos have survived, and those that did are disintegrating.

In my Ancestors paintings, I've tried to capture the decay and breakdown of these images - and the importance and formality the sitters experienced while being recorded for posterity... They appear to me as in a time warp.

"Duchess" was grandmother's dog, that's why she appears in three paintings. Some relatives are still traceable. Others were lost in the Diaspora.
